In “What’s Great About GroupWise 8 – Part 1,” we checked out some of the great new features the GroupWise Windows client has to offer. In this article, we’ll review the new features in the WebAccess and the Linux/Macintosh clients, plus discuss some points of particular interest for GroupWise administrators.

The GroupWise WebAccess Client brings you quite a few major improvements:

  • Email Ease: You can now view all of your emails in one scrollable list; no more clicking Next 20, etc.
  • Calendar Improvements: The new version allows you to color-code your calendar items, drag and drop, publish your calendar externally, and adjust your time zone settings.
  • Contact Management: Enjoy better search, filtering, and quick view capabilities.
  • Auto-save: The new auto-save feature will save your work in the event that your computer crashes, so that you can retrieve it the next time you start GroupWise.
  • Quicker Load Time: With the new version, you won’t have to wait to download your address book, therefore your inbox loads much more quickly.
  • Daily Tasks: Print a better view of your daily calendar.

The Linux/Macintosh Client continues to lag behind the Windows client but this version does include some handy features:

  • Ability to customize dashboards
  • Import external calendars and color-code appointments
  • Protect work with auto-save function
  • Interact with external email accounts and bring them into the Home View
  • Categorize emails as in the GW 7 Windows client

All of the features we have been discussing are great for our user community, but I also wanted to cover some of the most frequent questions raised by GroupWise Administrators:

  • Does GroupWise 8 support the iPhone? Novell has stated that iPhone support will be provided via their technology partner, NotifyLink. NotifyLink also provides support for Blackberry and many other mobile devices. So while there is a charge for their software, they can provide their services via a server at your site or theirs. For busy administrators, this can be a great way to support the plethora of mobile devices making their way into our environments. It is also a great way to fulfill iPhone support without adding more hardware!
  • Is GroupWise management via iManager available in GroupWise 8? Sadly, no. Looking toward the future, it has not yet been decided whether management will be via iManager or via a stand-alone management console such as the one available in ZCM (which would be then be accessible from iManager).
  • What is the future of the Outlook connector? While the GroupWise team worked diligently on this, they have not come up with a product they are happy with to integrate GroupWise and Outlook 2007. So currently, no Outlook connector for 2007 is available. Integration for previous versions will be through the GroupWise 7 client and the previous Outlook connector.

While a few of these notes may be disappointing, GroupWise continues to move forward with more productivity features than ever before. All in all, the improvements are worth the upgrade in order to provide a more feature-rich environment for your user community.
